The conversation around ultra fast fashion is gaining momentum. When organizations like Bon magasinage publicly take a stand against ultra fast fashion—as highlighted in a recent La Presse article—an entire ecosystem begins to mobilize to rethink how we produce, buy, and consume. At Renaissance, we are pleased to see this collective reflection gaining ground.
And for good reason: it is precisely this same commitment to acting in alignment with our values that led us, in January 2026, to make a firm decision. Since then, clothing from brands like Shein and Temu received as donations is no longer put up for sale in our thrift stores. Instead, these items are redirected to other recovery channels in order to limit waste, support reuse, and reduce landfill.
For 30 years, Renaissance has existed to demonstrate that another way of consuming is both possible and desirable. Our mission is twofold: to support the socio-professional integration of people who are far from the job market, and to encourage a more responsible relationship with the goods we own.
“We want to remain as consistent as possible, and the business practices of these two brands do not align with our values or with our standards in terms of environmental impact and the fight against overconsumption,” says Éric St-Arnaud, Executive Director of Renaissance.
Ultra fast fashion runs counter to everything we stand for. Clothing designed to be worn only a handful of times, produced under opaque conditions, and sold at prices that defy any logic of sustainability—this model directly fuels the overconsumption and waste we work every day to counter. Selling these items in our thrift stores would have sent a message contrary to our commitment.
This is not a commercial decision. It is a decision of consistency.
Extending the lifespan of goods. Encouraging more mindful consumption. Supporting a local, social, and sustainable circular economy. These principles guide everything we do—and this decision is part of that.
Donate instead of throwing things away. Buy second-hand. Choose clothing made to last. These are simple actions, but they have a real impact on the environment, the community, and the people we support every day on their path toward independence and employment.
Thank you to everyone who, through their donations, purchases, and everyday choices, is helping move things in the right direction.
